Make Your Content Work on the Web One of the traps Web editors often fall into is assuming that what works in print also works on line. That assumption is responsible for lots of Web content that fails to interest or serve site visitors. Here's a demonstration of how we reworked one unsuccessful, "print-like" page into content that is effective in the special environment of the Web. It uses a page from the Web site of the American Water Works Association, a professional organization for people who work for water utilities. The demonstration is in the form of a downloadable PDF document (see the link below). (This makeover example comes from a workshop Susan West recently presented on writing and editing for the Web. The full seminar is available, for a fee, from the archives of the Stanford Publishing Course. Since the seminar, the water association has adopted many of Susan's suggestions. You can see the results here.) (4/21/05) Click on the link below to open the PDF document in a new browser window. Then you can print or save it. (You'll need Adobe Reader.)
